Worst Run State in the U.S.? CA Dem Proposes Bill That Will Shutdown Small Restaurants

Posted by Brian

Is this the new face of "authentic" Mexican food restaurants for Californians?
With California tied for the worst unemployment rate in the country (9.6, not counting those who have dropped out of the labor force), Democrat Mark DeSauliner (Concord) has proposed a bill (SB-747) that would require every restaurant to pay for, and conduct "risk assessment" testing on every item on their menu, and provide a "Public Health Impact Report", along with a mitigation plan for any impacts.  The rationale for the bill is to determine if their food "contributes significantly to a significant public health epidemic".
Am I missing something here?  Where are we seeing an "epidemic"of people getting sick and dying from eating out at restaurants? I thought the whole purpose of the our health and safety codes, along with inspections currently in place do that. The "fat epidemic", maybe? We consumers are already deluged with information about calories, fat, trans-fats, salt, and everything else on menus, it is practically overwhelming. The facts to make sensible choices are already there.
There aren't any epidemics! This is another "crisis" created by a politician to steal more money from the people of California.  It has nothing to do with safety, and everything to do with extortion.  Extortion that will literally put every small restaurant in the state out of business, leaving only the cookie-cutter chain restaurants to survive.
In a state with the largest Hispanic population in the country (14.1 Million), how ironic (and sad) will it be to have Taco Bell be representative of "authentic" Mexican food?

CALIFORNIA BILL COULD SHUT DOWN SMALL RESTAURANTS
by WARNER TODD HUSTON  10 Apr 2013

The State of California has one of the worst proposals of any legislature in the country this year with a new bill that would force every restaurant and food service business in the state to commission an expensive "risk assessment" test for every menu item.

Such a test could cost thousands of dollars for every food item sold. This outrageous and cost prohibitive testing would certainly cause all but the biggest chain restaurants to go out of business almost instantly.

Debt, Unemployment, Disability: Obama's 1st Term Legacy

Posted by Brian

Obama's first term has come to an end with a thud. On the economy and jobs, one would have to, as Hillary Clinton might say, suspend disbelief to argue that Obama's economic policies have worked.
Here are several stories from CNSNews which chronicle the complete failure of those policies:

First Term: Obama Increased Debt $50,521 Per Household; More Than First 42 Presidents in 53 Terms Combined
(CNSNews.com) - During Barack Obama’s first term as president of the United States, the debt of the federal government increased by $5.8 trillion, which exceeds the combined debt accumulated under all presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton (my emphasis). Continue Reading

First Term: Americans ‘Not in Labor Force’ Increased 8,332,000
(CNSNews.com) - The number of Americans age 16 or older who decided not to work or even to seek a job increased by 8,332,000 to a record 88,839,000 in President Barack Obama’s first term, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.    At the same time, the number of retired workers collecting Social Security increased by only 4,234,480. Continue Reading

First Term: Americans Collecting Disability Increased 1,385,418—Now 1 for Each 13 Full-Time Workers
(CNSNews.com) - During President Barack Obama’s first term, the number of Americans collecting federal disability insurance increased by 1,385,418 to a record 8,827,795. As a result, there is now one person collecting disability in this county for every 13 people working full-time. Forty-two years ago, in December 1968, there were 51 people working full-time in this country for each person collecting disability. Continue Reading

After all the pomp and circumstance of tomorrow's swearing-in ceremony and the multi-million-dollar galas, President Obama and Congress have one hell of a job ahead of them.  Economists are expecting "sub par growth" for 2013, with the $17T debt being the chief drag on the economy. Businesses are hesitant to expend capital due to the uncertainty in the economy, which will also create uncertainty in the markets.  Both indicate slow growth, to near stagnation.   One of the biggest fears for business is changing regulations from the government and the EPA.  While Obama and the Democrats blame "Big Business"  for hoarding profits, it is the actions and words of Barack Obama himself which is creating the fear.
On both the debt and the regulations, Barack Obama gives no indication of changing course on either one.  He has been unwilling up to this point to even consider a reduction in spending which would lower the deficits below $1T.  His entire budget is based on tax increases for the "rich", which nearly every economist agrees will not provide any significant increase in revenue to the Federal government, and which over the long-term would yield less revenue.  Any reduction in spending has been met with stubborn resistance, or a plan to delay spending cuts until some unforeseen period in the future.
This inability to deal in any meaningful way with the debt is combined with the uncertainty of what new regulations and meddling the Feds have in store in the future.  The EPA is like a virus, constantly mutating what standards that business must meet. They have unilaterally mandated more and more stringent air quality standards on the power industry, which costs the companies millions of dollars in upgrades to to individual plants.  For those who don't meet the unrealistic time line imposed for some of these changes, the companies are assessed multimillion dollar fines and penalties, and ordered to prop up "green energy" companies more millions.
Then there is the NLRB,  which has been wracked by allegations and resignations of corruption within its ranks. Of course, there is the case of the NLRB suing Boeing after the company announced it was moving the production of its Max 737 to South Carolina (a right-to-work state) from its Washington facility (a union shop). It was a clear case of union retaliation, which the Obama NLRB went along with. The case was later dropped, but not before it had a chilling effect not only Boeing, but across the business community.

If Obama stubbornly refuses to change course on his economic policies we will continue to see the kind of pathetic economic numbers produced in his first term. Worse, if and when the Fed is finally forced to increase the interest rate, well, you ain't seen bad yet.

Right-To-Work States Haver Lower Unemployment, Higher Wages

Right To Work States Have Lower Unemployment, Higher Income and Healthcare Coverage, NRTW President Says
By Craig Bannister December 12, 2012

History shows that Michigan's citizens will soon be saying that the state's new "Right to Work" law is "a good thing for Michigan," National Right to Work Pres. Mark Mix explains.

In an exclusive interview with "The Right Views," Mix discusses the benefits Michigan will reap by becoming the nation's 24th Right to Work state and explains that the goal is to promote prosperity and individual freedom, not to bust unions:

"First of all, Right to Work is about individual worker freedom. It is wrong to think that, in this country, we could force a worker to pay a private organization for the privilege of working. So, on a fundamental basis, it's about individual freedom."

With Fiscal Cliff Looming, California Steps On Gas, Implements Cap-and-Trade

Posted by Brian

You're driving down a barren stretch of road.  Signs tell you to turn around, that the road ends at a cliff.  You slow down and turn around, right?  Not if you're Governor Jerry Brown and an overwhelmingly Democrat State House.  You ignore the signs and press the gas pedal to the floor.

That is what the Governor Brown and the Democrats are doing to an anemic California economy.  With some of the highest unemployment rates, record numbers of people on food stamps and welfare, while businesses and entrepreneurs like billionaire Steve Woszniak fleeing the state, California lawmakers are implementing a Cap-and-Trade law that will put the air brakes on an economy already struggling.

California has literally hundreds of towns and cities with unemployment above 13%, and over 20 California cities above 30%!

Cap-and-Trade will continue the downward spiral of a once-great state, and lead to a mass exodus of both small business and an already fiscally devastated population.

CA IMPLEMENTS CAP AND TRADE TOMORROW
by BEN SHAPIRO  13 Nov 2012

Beginning Wednesday, the state of California will implement a “cap and trade” system designed to curb carbon emissions and cripple the state’s economy. Well, actually, it’s just designed to curb carbon emissions. Crippling the state economy is merely a nifty byproduct.

Is Labor Dept. Using Storm To Delay Poor Job Numbers?

Posted by Brian
Coming off a September jobs report that showed unemployment dropped to 7.8%, which was heralded by those on the left as proof that Obama has the country on the right track, comes the news that the Labor Department may "delay" the release of the October jobs' number. Is the regime now using Hurricane Sandy as an excuse to delay the jobs report until after the election?
Soundly panned by those on the right as trickery, the September jobs report had business people and economists all over the country flummoxed.  How could an increase of a mere 114K jobs move the unemployment number from 8.1%  to 7.8%. The answer, of course, is that more people dropped out of the workforce than were employed, thus decreasing the total number of persons counted in their calculations. Over the last year alone, over 1.1 MILLION people have dropped out of the workforce, thus are not being counted. If the same number of people were still being counted in the workforce as when Obama took office, the unemployment number would be around 10.7%.
Trying to ride the "encouraging" September jobs report,  the Obama campaign would be hurt by a poor jobs report just a week before the election.   Hurricane Sandy provides a timely excuse to delay a poor jobs report until after people have cast their ballots.
How convenient!

Labor Department Says No Decision Yet on Whether to Delay Jobs Report
By Eric Morath

The Labor Department said Monday that it has yet to make a decision on whether to delay Friday’s closely-watched October employment report due to the effects from Hurricane Sandy.

Federal government offices in Washington are closed Monday and may be shut again Tuesday due to the storm. It isn’t clear if the closure would cause a delay in processing the data.

“We will assess the situation when the weather emergency is over and notify the press and public of any changes at that time,” said Gary Steinberg, spokesman for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the data arm of the department.

The Labor Department is also scheduled to release its third quarter employment cost index Wednesday, and the third quarter productivity and weekly jobless claims reports Thursday.

Obama's America: 2015 Energy Prices 800% Higher

Posted by Brian

Lost in the fog of the 2012 Presidential campaign is what the state of power is going to be in less than three years.

This is one campaign promise that Obama has definitely fulfilled.  In 2008, Obama stated "electricity prices would necessarily skyrocket" under his plan of cap and trade.  Unable to get Cap and Trade legislation through Congress, Obama has unleashed the EPA on the coal industry.
The result?  212 coal plants shut down by 2015, eliminating over hundreds of megawatts of electrical production.  Coal mines are being shut down all over the country.  Ohio, West Virginia, and the other coal-producing states are being hit especially hard. Tens of thousands of jobs are being eliminated in the coal industry, and supporting industries.  These coal mines, once abandoned, cannot be reopened due to deterioration of the mine.  The loss of this power production will also have a devastating effect on the manufacturing industry as a whole. You can't produce goods if there is no power.
A recent capacity auction saw 2015 power go for $167 per megawatt.  The price for 2012 was $36.  An 800% increase!
Obama is sacrificing the industrial might of the United States for his core belief of the inherent unfairness of America in the world.  What better way to "even the playing field" than removing our ability to compete economically on the world stage?  His solar and windmill energy policy is risking America's future on the belief that the sun will shine, and the wind will blow 24/7.
The damage that Obama is wreaking on this country is now such, that some of it will not be able to be undone, as with the coal mines. It has never been more important to defeat Obama in November than it is now if we are to turn around those things which we are able to, and minimize the future damage of his policies.

CNN: Dems Claim Of 4.5M Jobs Created Not Even In Ballpark

Posted by Brian
None other than CNN is blasting the Democrats' and Obama Administration's claim that 4.5 million new jobs have been created due to Obama and Democrat policies. While saying that the numbers are "technically" correct, CNN says that when you put everything in context, the economy has actually lost well over one million jobs since Obama took office.

In addition, CNN points out that of the over 5 million private sector jobs lost, 80% were medium to high paying jobs.  Yet, of the jobs gained, over 60% were low paying jobs.

CNN does miss one salient point in its analysis. While pointing out that unemployment is now higher than when Obama took office, by a full percentage point, they point out that we are better off than at the high point of 10% unemployment.  Once again, context is the key here.  While technically, the unemployment percentage IS better, what is missed is that the number of people counted in those numbers has decreased. NOT due to fining employment, but due to those who have stopped looking for work, do not collect unemployment, and are now on the welfare rolls.  These individuals are not counted in the unemployment figures, which has the effect of making unemployment appear lower that is actually is. When those people are identified, the "real" unemployment jumps to over 15%!

The problem for Obama is that the average person sees that the economy is not getting better. DNC talking points are not going to convince those people who actually see their friends and family members struggling, or the scores of new homeless people and families in their communities.  The misery is right in front of their faces, and no amount of election-year slogans and twisting of fact is going to change that.

Can you say, "Massive Failure"?

CNN Fact Check: About those 4.5 million jobs ...
By the CNN Wire Staff updated 7:33 AM EDT, Wed September 5, 2012

(CNN) -- Anyone watching the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night heard the number 4.5 million several times. "Despite incredible odds and united Republican opposition, our president took action, and now we've seen 4.5 million new jobs,"
San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, the party's keynote speaker, said. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who served as President Barack Obama's chief of staff, and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who followed Obama's November rival Mitt Romney as governor of Massachusetts, both cited the same number.
It's a big-sounding number, given the still-sputtering job market. So we're giving it a close eyeballing.

Obama's Plan Working!! Unemployment Rises in 44 States In July

Posted by Brian
Labor reports that unemployment rose in 44 of 50 states in July.  This is a mere three and a half weeks after Obama declared "Our plan worked" to an audience at a campaign stop.
Well, if his plan is working, you have to ask - Just what is his plan?
For the record:  I believe him.  I think the economy and his policies are doing exactly what he wants.  While the economy weakens, thus leveling the economic playing field for foreign countries (a little international social justice), and knocking the "arrogant" (his word) America off of its perch, he uses the economic misery for those in this country to divide the electorate into "haves" and "have-nots".
Obama is correct.  His plan is working perfectly.

Unemployment rates rose in 44 U.S. states in July
Washington Times
By Christopher S. Rugaber-Associated Press Friday, August 17, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — Unemployment rates rose in 44 U.S. states in July, the most states to show a monthly increase in more than three years and a reflection of weak hiring nationwide.

The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment rates fell in only two states and were unchanged in four.

Unemployment rates rose in nine states that are considered battlegrounds in the presidential election. That trend, if it continued, could pose a threat to President Barack Obama’s re-election bid in less than three months.

The Obama Blame Game

Posted by Brian
The "blame Bush" rhetoric having failed, Barack Obama has set his sights on a new villain for the pathetic state of the economy, especially where it concerns the 14.1% unemployment rate in the black community: it's everyone else's fault.

In an interview with Black Enterprise, Obama lays the blame for the high unemployment rate on city and state governments, as well as Congress.  This from a man who, three years ago, said of the economy, "Give it to me", "I'll take that responsibility".  But three years later, he has yet to take responsibility for anything that has happened on his watch.

In 2009 he said, "My job is to solve problems, not to stand on the sidelines and carp and gripe". Well, that's all you do, Mr. President.  Whether it's the "economic headwinds" coming from Europe, the "hand we were dealt" from George Bush, or the "tsunami in Japan", or any one of a dozen other things to blame, Obama will predictably take zero personal responsibility for his policies.

Just two weeks ago, Obama flatly stated, "we tried our plan - and it worked!"

Well, which is it Mr. President, have they worked, or not?  You don't get to have it both ways.  The fact is: You haven't solved anything.  You've made things worse.

The American people didn't elect you to piss and moan about the "cards you were dealt".  You knew the economy was in a recession before you took office, and you told the American people that you wanted the job, and had a plan to fix it. A lot of us who didn't vote for you knew you were blowing smoke up our ass, but there were many who bought into your "messiah" complex.  Now that many of those folks have awakened from their slumber (or nightmare), and see that it was all "rainbows and unicorns" campaign rhetoric, you try to convince us that we are all in this together, and need to share the collective blame.

Now you say that we need to elect you to a second term to really get it right.  Sorry, Mr, President, but you own this economy, and you don't get a mulligan on this one!

In an interview with Black Enterprise magazine, President Barack Obama blames state and local governments, as well as Congress, for over 14 percent black unemployment.

"Black unemployment still stands at nearly 14%. How do you communicate that the economy is headed in the right direction?," the editor in chief of Black Enterpriseasks Obama.

Pelosi Says 8.3% Unemployment Is "Step In The Right Direction"

Pelosi's "Step in the right direction"?
Nancy Pelosi tweeting to her sycophants, called unemployment rising to 8.3%, and a net increase of 32,000 more Americans out of work, as a "small step in the right direction". This unemployment rate doesn't even count the 150,000 Americans who, discouraged, quit looking for work.  And Romney is out of touch?!

July jobs report: Hiring picks up, unemployment rises
By Annalyn Censky @CNNMoney August 3, 2012: 12:45 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Businesses stepped up their hiring in July, but the unemployment rate ticked higher anyway.

Employers said they added 163,000 jobs in the month, according to a Labor Department report released Friday, much better than the 95,000 jobs economists had forecast.

But at the same time, the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 8.3% as households claimed they lost 195,000 jobs.

Obama Tells Audience "Our Plan Worked!", 8.6 Million Leave Labor Force

Posted by Brian
"We tried our plan - and it worked!"
President Obama is now hitting uncharted territory with, possibly, the most delusional statement he's yet made on the economy.  He can't possibly believe the crap that falls out of his mouth, so I'm can only conclude that this President, and this administration, believe that the American people are stupid enough to believe this tripe.

Let's see how well Obama's economic plan has worked:

June 2012
Unemployment (U-3)  - steady at 8.2% (up from 8.1 in Apr)
Underemployed (U-6) - rose to 14.9%
Long Term Unemployment (> 27 weeks) 5.4 million or 41.9% of all unemployed
Discouraged workers - no longer looking: 821,000
Labor Force Participation: 63.8%
Americans who have left labor force: 8.6 million
Americans on Food Stamps (Apr2012): 46.2 million (1 in 7 Americans)
US GDP (1st Qtr 2012): 1.9% (Historical 3.25%) - GDP under 3% 6 of last 7 Qtrs (3% - 4th Qtr 2011)

In addition to all of the sunshine shown above, since June 2009 inflation adjusted income has plummeted under Obama by 6.7%.  That is, the money you do make buys less.

I wonder what the numbers would look like if Obama's plan didn't work?

Obama on the economy: ‘We tried our plan — and it worked’
July 24, 2012

Discussing his economic policies at a fundraiser in Oakland,  California, last night, President Obama, told supporters that “we tried our plan — and it worked.”

“We tried that and it didn’t work,” Obama said of Mitt Romney’s proposed tax cuts and spending cuts, which he dismissed as a Bush-style “top down” economic policy.  “Just like we’ve tried their plan, we tried our plan — and it worked,” he added later in the speech.  “That’s the difference. That’s the choice in this election.  That’s why I’m running for a second term.”

Obama Ignores 13.6% Unemployment for Blacks, Promotes Jobs For Illegal Immigrants

Unemployment for blacks rose to 13.6% in May, well above the national average of 8.2%, and Barack Obama is promoting a jobs program for illegal immigrants.

How's that hope, change and Obama-money working out for you?

OBAMA JOBS PROGRAM: HELP ILLEGALS COMPETE WITH AMERICANS FOR SCARCE JOBS

Today, the Obama Administration, in an obvious attempt to boost the President's flailing reelection campaign, announced that it would bypass Congress and rewrite the nation's immigration laws.

The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.

Obama Says "Private Sector Is Fine"

Posted by Brian
"If you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth."
Anonymous

Barack Obama and his team have been out touting that his policies have created "4.2 million jobs" though unemployment remains at 8.3 percent, which is .5% higher than when he took office.  In addition, the "official" government numbers don't take into account the number of people who have left the job market altogether (quit looking for work) and those who are underemployed.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a much different figure than the one being touted by the Obama administration and its sycophants in the mainstream media.  BLS puts real unemployment at 14.8%, or over 78% higher than what is commonly reported.

Labor force statistics from the current population survey show that job growth has essentially flat-lined since January 2010 (see below), indicating that much of the decrease in the 'official" unemployment rate has been driven by people giving up looking for a job, and dropping off the unemployment rolls, rather than actual job creation.

Encouraging is that, at least some, reporters are finally starting to broach the subject with the President of whether his policies have had any effect.  Observing his response (halting, looking down), I'm starting to wonder if Obama even believes his own BS anymore.

Video: What The Obama Jobs Economy Really Looks Like

Posted by Brian

Back in 2008, Obama told the American people that passing his massive stimulus bill would keep unemployment from rising above 8%.  In a side by side comparison of what Obama's own economic team said, contrasted with real world unemployment numbers (not counting U6 and those who have stopped looking for work altogether), Glenn Beck co-host Stu Burguiere gives  a clear picture of how Obama is doing on the economy.

As we can see, not only have Obama's policies not worked as he said they would, but they have actually made thing worse!  This is according to his own numbers!

WH Senior Adviser: Unemployment Stimulates the Economy

Speaking in Durham North Carolina, and with unemployment rising to 9%, Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett is the latest statist to attempt to dumb-down the American public on economics. Like Nancy Pelosi before her, Jarrett makes the inane claim that unemployment checks are good for the economy. This follows her comment that  "we had" a bad economy. Had? This is the arrogance of the leftist. That she can sit there straight-faced, and imply that the economy is thriving, ignoring the suffering of people around the country, tells you how this bunch views the American public. Because they say it, we dolts are supposed to just ignore the economic ruin taking place in the country.
Look around you. Since 2009, gasoline (which affects the cost of everything) is up over 80%, beef is up 24%, bacon 22%. Inflation adjusted household incomes are going down. Your dollar today doesn't go as far as it did in in 2009.  Worse, it is the staples such as wheat and corn products, and all of the products that are dependent on those products, that are being affected.
And Valerie Jarrett wants the public to believe that high unemployment is a good thing? Amazing.

Flashback: Nancy Pelosi says Unemployment creates jobs and is one of the best economic stimulus.

Gallup Finds Unemployment Climbing to Nine Percent in February
By Matt Cover February 20, 2012

(CNSNews.com) – Unemployment in the U.S. rose to nine percent in mid-February, up from 8.3 percent a month earlier, according to a new Gallup survey. The polling company said this suggests that it is “premature” to assume the economy will not feature prominently in the 2012 election season.
Gallup figures typically provide an indication of what the government will report at the end of the month.
“The U.S. unemployment rate, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, is 9.0% in mid-February,” Gallup said in its mid-month unemployment survey, released on February 17. “The mid-month reading normally reflects what the U.S. government reports for the entire month, and is up from 8.3% in mid-January.”

U6 Unemployment Graph

What do the NAR, Consumer Confidence and CBO forecasts have in common? If you said, "they are all completely worthless" you are absolutely correct. Alas, the market needs to "trade" off numbers, which is why the just released CBO numbers apparently are important... And the fact that the CBO predicted negative $2.5 trillion in net debt by 2011 back in 2011 is largely ignored. Anyway, here are some of the highlights.
  • 2012 Deficit: $1.1 trillion; 2013 Deficit: $0.6 - yes, we are cackling like mad too...
  • Unemployment to remain above 8% in 2012 and 2013; will be around 7% by end of 2015; to drop to 5.25% by end of 2022.
    • This forecast is utterly idiotic and is completely unattainable unless the US workforce drops to all time lows and the US economy generates 300,000 jobs a month for 10 years
  • Needless to say, CBO assumes the best of all worlds in this meaningless forecast
  • But here is the kicker: "Had that portion of the decline in the labor force participation rate since 2007 that is attributable to neither the aging of the baby boomers nor the downturn in the business cycle (on the basis of the experience in previous downturns) not occurred, the unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2011 would have been about 1¼ percentage points higher than the actual rate of 8.7 percent" translation: CBO just admitted that the BLS numbers are bogus and real unemployment is 10%. Thank you
