What the devices can record is "virtually unlimited". What can possibly go wrong?
Obama Bypasses Congress to Mandate Black Boxes for All Cars -- Beginning in '14
December 13, 2012 By Pete Winn
(CNSNews.com) - Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of "black boxes" in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”
The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs) – so-called “black box devices” -- to collect specific safety related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014.

Smart Meters: Arrests, Power Being Cut to Ensure Mandatory Compliance of Monitoring
Posted by Brian
H/T to The Blaze
Last month, a woman in Naperville, Illinois was arrested for refusing to allow the power company to install a Smart Meter on her property (Story here).
A companion story to this is the Ohio woman, who has serious health problems, which include a pacemaker and a breathing machine to prevent her from dying, had her power cut off because she had legitimate concerns regarding the safety of the meters as they related to her pacemaker.
She had requested that the power company, AEP-Ohio, provide her assurances that the electro-magnetic frequencies would not interfere with here pacemaker, as there is at least one case where in which this appears to have happened (see video below).
The response of AEP? Show up with law enforcement officers to cut her power off. Even though they were aware that she needs a breathing machine to ensure that she doesn't die during the night, or that there is an Ohio law that forbids turning the power off during the dead of winter. Even though her power bill was paid up to date. It didn't matter. The Smart Meter which may put your life at risk must be installed, or lose your power and possibly freeze to death.
How many people really think that when they buy a piece of property that they really own it? Between regulations, taxes, public utilities telling you what type of electric meter you have to have, the EPA, building codes, and a plethora of other things, you are really only leasing it from the government. They can come in at any time to put in state-mandated monitoring devices which you have little to no say about. The EPA can determine that you have a rare snail on you property that needs protection, or that you have standing water on a low-lying area, and re-designate your land as a wetland, or endangered species habitat, and seize your land with no compensation.
Now, supposedly these Smart Meters are for our own good. The claim is that we can better monitor our power usage, and that it saves us money on our bills. That's a good thing, right? They also allow the companies to read the meter remotely without have someone go door to door, saving the power company money, which of course we know, said savings will be passed on to the consumer. Ha!
The flip side of this coin is that it allows the power company to know your living habits in disturbing detail. They can determine what time you wash your cloths, or when you are preparing meals, by the amount of power you are using and the type of energy signature that your appliance produces.
Though the meters are advertised to lower your bills, many see their bills increase. Why? Because power companies have a tiered rate system, assessing higher premium surcharges at certain times of the day, the new meters know if your usage increases during those times, and you are then billed at a rates up to four times higher than the standard kw/per hour rate.
Even this is not the most disturbing thing about the Smart Meter's ability to track your everyday habits. By knowing when your power is being used, certain things can be extrapolated using this data. Suppose you go out several times a week to the club, coming in at one or two in the morning. When you get home at those times, you turn on lights or other appliances. Maybe you take a shower, which activates your water heater. The power company now knows this, based on the date being transmitted by RF signals from your meter. If, at some time in the future, this data is shared with other entities, say auto or government-run health insurance exchanges/companies, they can then use this data to determine that your behavior places you in a higher risk category, and determine that you should pay higher premiums, or disallow certain treatments based on your chosen lifestyle. One town is even looking to install "Smart" parking meters (link) which you pay with credit, or smart cards. A pretty good way to monitor your movements, don't you think?
That government and law enforcement are telling citizens that Smart Meter compliance is mandatory should cause a chill to run up your spine.
Handicapped Ohio woman has power cut for refusing Smart Meter
Louis Donovan of Carson, CA, who wears a pacemaker, speaks of being admitted to the hospital four times for cardiac arrhythmia. His problems with his pacemaker began after a Smartmeter was installed at his residence, disappearing when the Smartmeter was removed.

TX Student: School's "Mandatory" RFID Tracking Chip Unconstitutional
Posted by Brian
Andrea Hernandez, a Texas high school student, is challenging the constitutionality of a "mandatory" requirement that all students must wear a student badge with an embedded RFID chip.
The school district claims it is for the "safety" of the students, as well as for "attendance" purposes.
The school may be partially honest in their claims about attendance being one of the primary purposes. Most school districts receive funds based on the number of students attending school on any given day.
The truth is probably that the school is trying to ensure that they get every cent that they are due, based on attendance, and that one of the real reason for the RFID has everything to do with money, and little to do with safety.
Another more insidious reason may be to "train" students to be more blindly compliant to authority, i.e. the government. As Miss Hernandez point out, correctly, the RFID chip does not "turn off" after they leave the campus, and students may be susceptible to predators.
A judge has issued a temporary restraining order, saying that the "mandatory" requirement by the principal is a violation of speech and freedom of religion.

The idea of being tracked wherever one goes by a government computer chip may sound like something out of Science Fiction dystopia films like “V for Vendetta” or “Total Recall,” but apparently, it’s actually happening. And at least one Texas high school student has embarked on a mission to stop it.

Is The NYPD Experimenting With Drones Over The City? Evidence Points To Yes
Miami, Cities In Texas Also Said To Be Trying This New Way To Be Eye In The Sky

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — They’re used in war zones for surveillance and military strikes.
But are there plans to deploy drones in the Big Apple to keep an eye on New Yorkers?
More and more people believe it’s inevitable, reports CBS 2’s Don Dahler.
Drones are unmanned aircraft that can fly at low altitudes and shoot live video — or shoot live missiles.
Surveillance cameras already dot the city’s streets, but is the NYPD exploring the use of even more eyes in the skies, in the form of drones? Some evidence points to yes.

Big Brother Alert: Do You Tweet? Government Receiving Archive Of Every Tweet Sent
Posted by Brian
In George Orwell's classic novel "1984", one of the things that I remember being most disconcerting was that the government, Big Brother, was able to watch Winston Smith's every move. No matter what he did, where he went, there were camera's, microphones, or other means to track the people's movements, thoughts, writings, etc. In today's electronic age, pretty much everything that Orwell envisioned is now possible. Maybe even more. Twitter, Facebook, instant messaging, and other means of communication are now commonplace. They have allowed us to be able to communicate like never before, What used to take days or even weeks to communicate, can now be accomplished in mere nanoseconds. They allow businesses to have face-to-face meetings with clients halfway around the world using Skype, or Go To Meeting, saving millions of dollars in travel expenses. We have seen the many different protests that have taken place here in the U.S., and around the world in which Twitter became a quick way for participants to organize and stay in touch with each other. The means can for which these methods are used are neither good nor bad. It is the intent behind the individuals using them.
However, it sends a chill down my spine when government says that they want access to a huge archive of every communication, supposedly because they are historic. And the Library of Congress may in fact have no nefarious intentions. The problem is that what the current crop of people intend is not what is important, The problem is what future government officials may use this access to such a vast database for. We already know that Congress just gave authorization to the military to have the authority to round up and detain Americans, without charges, for who they deem to be a threat to national security. What is going to be their benchmark for a "threat"? Will it be for people who are actually trying build some device that will kill thousands, or millions, of people? Or will it also be used for people who "tweet" something derogatory about the government, or some government official? Or maybe some guy or girl who blogs their opinions about a government that they think has gotten too large?
Freedom of speech is a very precious thing. We are already seeing some subtle, and not-so subtle examples of government clamping down on free speech.
The government essentially having all of these "tweets" delivered to them on a silver platter certainly gives me pause. And a little chill up my spine.

Library of Congress to receive entire Twitter archive

Tweets, emails and other electronic communications can be considered "government documents" and must be preserved. The National Archives handles official government materials, while the Library of Congress' mandate is to deal with anything that may have long-term historical interest.
"We're basically in the same situation as the National Archives, only on a much larger scale," said Bill Lefurgy, digital initiatives program manager at the Library of Congress national digital information infrastructure and preservation program. "We tend to have a much larger perspective in terms of what we collect." He joined the Federal Drive with Tom Temin and Amy Morris Tuesday morning to talk about the library's digital mission.
But how much digital information are we talking about? How about all of the tweets from Twitter's archives?

Electronic skin tattoo has medical, gaming, spy uses

A hair-thin electronic patch that adheres to the skin like a temporary tattoo could transform medical sensing, computer gaming and even spy operations, according to a US study published Thursday.
The micro-electronics technology, called an epidermal electronic system (EES), was developed by an international team of researchers from the United States, China and Singapore, and is described in the journal Science.
"It's a technology that blurs the distinction between electronics and biology," said co-author John Rogers, a professor in materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dept. Of Education - Going Rambo
Posted by Brian

The story of a federal SWAT team descending on a home in Stockton, CA is causing people to ask the question: "What in the hell is the Department of Education doing with their own SWAT team?" For that matter, how many other departments in the U.S. government have their own law enforcement arms? Has Congress specifically authorized these autonomous law enforcement teams, or is monies designated to the Department being diverted into these off-shoots?
I, for one would like to see somebody, anybody, in Congress open up a public investigation into finding out how many Departments have their own law enforcement, and why they exist. Why do they need them? Why are existing law enforcement agencies (FBI, CIA, Secret Service, Homeland Security, TSA, state and local agencies) not enough. Who controls these, apparently, secret law enforcement agencies?
The American people deserve to know about this group, and if there are any others out there.

The guns are to replace old firearms used by Education’s Office of Inspector General, which is the law enforcement arm of the department.

The New Obama Police State: Stalinist Tactics Used By Feds To Collect Student Loans?
Posted by Brian
h/t to The Blaze
Have you always thought that officers dressed in military-style gear busting through doors and dragging people out into the street in their underwear was something that you saw in the movies, or in black and white newsreel showing Soviet or Nazi soldiers rounding up dissidents?
Kenneth Wright of Stockton CA was probably wondering if he had woken up in the middle of a 'Twilight Zone' episode, the one where a racist Vic Morrow walks out of a bar and steps out into 1930's Nazi Germany, and is identified as Jewish. Except that he is in 2011, in the United States, is black, and his wife owes on a Federal student loan. For this, a S.W.A.T team shows up, busts down his door, drags him out in his underwear, terrorizes his three children, and holds him in the back of a police cruiser for six hours. In the end, they released him, as his estranged wife no longer even lives at the address. Oh, and they "fixed" his door by screwing a piece of plywood over the hole.
Folks, this is scary stuff. Yes his wife should pay off her loan. But to send a S.W.A.T. team at six in the morning!? A bigger question is this - Is this going to be the norm for federal law enforcement? I mean, where was the imminent threat to these officers that a paramilitary action was called for? What kind of treatment would the wife have been subjected to had she been home? Look at how Mr. Wright was treated, and he wasn't even the "target".
Who was it that issued the search warrant and called in S.W.A.T.? The Department of Education. Is this how the DOE is going to proceed in the future in collecting delinquent loans.
At the end of this video Mr. Wright tells everybody to make sure they pay their bills or this could happen to them. The tactic by the jackboots appears to have worked.
Maybe the feds ought to change the title of the department to the Department of Re-education.

The Obama Administration cotinues to use intimidation, threats, and Stalin-like tactics in dealing with businesses in the private sector. This new tactic is to hold CEO's personally responsible for illegal activities which may occur in their organization, regardless of whether they have any knowledge of the activities, effectively stripping the individual of due-process rights for the individual(s) involved.
Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word, equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Obama administration has launched an effort to remove a CEO in a private-sector pharmaceutical firm as punishment for violations in marketing laws. The Department of Health and Human Services notified Forest Laboratories that it plans to blacklist CEO Howard Solomon from doing any business with the federal government, a status that would effectively lock out Forest from any government contracting:

Overreaching Government -First, Feds Go After Raw Milk. Now Rabbits
Posted by Brian
Many of us have heard of the USDA going after Amish farmers selling raw, unpasteurized milk. In the Amish case, there were "zero"complaints of quality, illness from drinking the milk, or any other problems. It's that it isn't pasteurized. Now the USDA has set its sight on rabbits.
This is a prime example of government bureaucracies with too much power, obscure rules, and overzealous agents. And it's only going to get worse.
The USDA is turning into the agricultural version of the EPA and OSHA. These are Departments that create rules and regulations with virually no oversight. They in essence are able to creat laws out of this air, effectively doing the job that Congress is elected to do, and put fines, penalties, and even legal weight with jail sentences behind them.
A conservative Congress and President needs to be elected that will defund and dismantle a whole host these departmental bureaucracies, which are not supported by the U.S. Constitution as powers that have been delegated to the Federal Government.
Or, maybe the USDA is worried these rabbits pose a threat to national security and they are just nipping a rabbit sleeper cell in the bud.
USDA fines Missouri family $90k for selling a few rabbits without a license

It started out as a hobby, a way for the Dollarhite family in Nixa, Mo., to teach a teenage son responsibility. Like a lemonade stand.
But now, selling a few hundred rabbits over two years has provoked the heavy hand of the federal government to the tune of a $90,643 fine. The fine was levied more than a year after authorities contacted family members, prompting them to immediately halt their part-time business and liquidate their equipment.
The Dollarhite’s story, originally picked up by conservative blogger Bob McCarty, has turned into a call to arms for critics of the government’s reach and now has both Democratic and Republican lawmakers vowing to intervene.

Mileage Tax: Device Would Be Installed On Every Vehicle
Posted by Brian
While everyone is focused on the mass inconsistencies in the stories regarding the OBL killing, Obama and the Democrats are full speed ahead on numerous fronts in their statist agenda. One is putting an electronic device on every vehicle which would log every mile that you drive, and which would then be tacked onto your gas bill at a service station. The claim is that it would be used for highway funds. Apparently, the taxes already tacked onto gas for highway funds is not enough for these vampires, so they need to throw another tax onto the numerous taxes that already are "marked" for highways.
How about this: this little electronic device, besides logging your mileage, also logs everywhere you go, which is then uploaded to Big Brother everytime you pull in to fill up your vehicle. The government now has a way to track the whereabouts of everybody in the country.
Food for thought.
Obama administration floats draft plan to tax cars by the mile

The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.

ObamaCare - Full Speed Ahead
In direct defiance of a federal court order, Kathleen Sebelius and the Obama Administration continue to both fund and implement ObamaCare. As part of an "educational outreach", because we are just too stupid to understand how wonderful ObamaCare is, HHS would increase its budget by $15.1M, over quadrupling its current budget, while increasing staffing by just under 50%. This works out ot over $636,000 per new hire. Ladies and gentlemen, your Obama administration looking after your money. The arrogance, not to mention the criminal behavior, of this bunch is unbelievable. Combined with Obama's new $3.7T budget proposal, the answer that we are getting from this administration in regards to the message sent by the American people on November 2nd, is "Screw You! We do what we want." Are you pissed off yet?!
HHS looks to boost messaging efforts
By Jason Millman - 02/15/11 04:34 PM ET
The Obama administration health department office tasked with selling the healthcare reform law is looking to quadruple its budget while almost doubling the size of its staff.
Under the Department of Health and Human Services’ fiscal 2012 budget request, the assistant secretary for public affairs' office would get a bump from $4.8 million to $19.9 million in fiscal 2012. Meanwhile, the office would grow from 24 to 46 full-time equivalent employees.
Almost all of the new funding would be used to improve healthcare.gov and to conduct an educational outreach campaign “designed to help Americans understand and access their benefits and information under the law,” HHS wrote in its budget justification. The efforts were funded in fiscal 2010 and 2011 under the reform law, according to the budget document.

Internet "Kill Switch" - If The Government Controls Communication, Then What?
Regardless of how they try to spin this, protection from cyber attack, or whatever, this bill would give the Federal Government absolute power to control the means of communication among it's citizens. It will be interesting to see how the media reports this, what with all of their cheerleading in the Egyptian protests. The ability of the protestors to be able to organize was only possible because they could freely communicate. The first day of the protests, the Egyptian government shut down the internet and cell towers to squelch communication, but under pressure restored those services. If the media supports this bill, it will be clear that their template will have already been written for them by those on the left. If the government is able to control the means of communication, they then have absolute control over your voice, and your ability to effectively communicate.
'Kill Switch' Internet bill alarms privacy experts
By Jon Swartz, USA TODAY
SAN FRANCISCO — A raging debate over new legislation, and its impact on the Internet, has tongues wagging and fingers pointing from Silicon Valley to Washington, D.C.
Just as the Egyptian government recently forced the Internet to go dark, U.S. officials could flip the switch if the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset legislation becomes law, say its critics.
Proponents of the bill, which is expected to be reintroduced in the current session of Congress, dismiss the detractors as ill-informed — even naive.
The ominously nicknamed Kill Switch bill is sure to be a flashpoint of discussion at the RSA Conference, the nation's largest gathering of computer-security experts that takes place here this week.

TSA To Unionize. Feel Safer Now?

Unionizing the TSA
In case you thought airline security wasn’t annoying enough.
Robert VerBruggen
After a mere nine years in existence, the Transportation Security Administration rivals the DMV and the Postal Service as a played-out comedy cliché. And now the TSA is adding union bureaucracy to the mix. Second-rate standup performers are licking their chops; the rest of us should be much less delighted.
The agency’s head, John Pistole, recently gave its 40,000-plus employees the right to bargain collectively on “non-security employment issues.” Two unions, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), will compete in an election tentatively set to begin March 9.

A Glimpse Of A Possible Future?

With all of the media-driven what-if hysteria for everything from "potential" worldwide avian bird flu pandemics, the BP oil spill "environmental disaster", global warming/cooling/climate change, to calls for more "civil discourse" following the shootings in Tuscon, Rahm Emanuel's "never let a crisis go to waste" takes on greater significance. How much of our freedoms are we as American's willing to "voluntarily" cede to a bloated central government, based on notions of fairness, promoted by political elites and echoed by a complicit media? The story below, while humorous, is also frightening due to its complete plausibility.
The Ghost Of Thanksgiving Yet To Come
By Arnold Ahlert Wednesday, November 24, 2010
"Winston, come into the dining room, it's time to eat", Julia yelled to her husband.
"In a minute, honey, it's a tie score", he answered. Actually Winston wasn't very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington . Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its unseemly violence and the bad example it sets for the rest of the world, Winston was far less of a football fan than he used to be. Two-hand touch wasn't nearly as exciting.
Yet it wasn't the game that Winston was uninterested in. It was more the thought of eating another Tofu Turkey. Even though it was the best type of Veggie Meat available after the government revised the American Anti-Obesity Act of 2018, adding fowl to the list of federally-forbidden foods, (which already included potatoes, cranberry sauce and mince-meat pie), it wasn't anything like real turkey. And ever since the government officially changed the name of Thanksgiving Day to "A National Day of Atonement" in 2020, to officially acknowledge the Pilgrims historically brutal treatment of Native Americans, the holiday had lost a lot of its luster.
Eating in the dining room was also a bit daunting. The unearthly gleam of government-mandated fluorescent light bulbs made the Tofu Turkey look even weirder than it actually was, and the room was always cold. Ever since Congress passed the Power Conservation Act of 2016, mandating all thermostats, which were monitored and controlled by the electric company, be kept at 68 degrees, every room on the north side of the house was barely tolerable throughout the entire winter.
Still, it was good getting together with family. Or at least most of the family. Winston missed his mother, who passed on in October, when she had used up her legal allotment of live-saving medical treatment. He had had many heated conversations with the Regional Health Consortium, spawned when the private insurance market finally went bankrupt, and everyone was forced into the government health care program. And though he demanded she be kept on her treatment, it was a futile effort. The RHC's resources are limited, explained the government bureaucrat Winston spoke with on the phone. Your mother received all the benefits to which she was entitled. I'm sorry for your loss.
Ed couldn't make it either. He had forgotten to plug in his electric car last night, the only kind available after the Anti-Fossil Fuel Bill of 2021 outlawed the use of the combustion engines for everyone but government officials. The fifty mile round trip was about ten miles too far, and Ed didn't want to spend a frosty night on the road somewhere between here and there.
Thankfully, Winston's brother, John, and his wife were flying in. Winston made sure that the dining room chairs had extra cushions for the occasion. No one complained more than John about the pain of sitting down so soon after the government - mandated cavity searches at airports, which severely aggravated his hemorrhoids.
Ever since a terrorist successfully smuggled a cavity bomb onto a jetliner, the TSA told Americans the added "inconvenience" was an "absolute necessity" in order to stay "one step ahead of the terrorists". Winston's own body had grown accustomed to such probing ever since the government expanded their scope to just about anywhere a crowd gathered, via Anti-Profiling Act of 2022. That law made it a crime to single out any group or individual for "unequal scrutiny", even when probable cause was involved. Thus, cavity searches at malls, train stations, bus depots, etc., etc., had become almost routine. Almost.
The Supreme Court is reviewing the statute, but most Americans expect a Court composed of six progressives and three conservatives to leave the law intact. "A living Constitution is extremely flexible", said the Court's eldest member, Elena Kagan. "Europe has had laws like this one for years. We should learn from their example", she added.
Winston's thoughts turned to his own children. He got along fairly well with his 12-year-old daughter, Brittany, mostly because she ignored him. Winston had long ago surrendered to the idea that she could text anyone at any time, even during Atonement Dinner. Their only real confrontation had occurred when he limited her to 50,000 texts a month, explaining that was all he could afford. She whined for a week, but got over it.
His 16-year-old son, Jason, was another matter altogether. Perhaps it was the constant bombarding he got in public school that global warming, the bird flu, terrorism or any of a number of other calamities were "just around the corner", but Jason had developed a kind of nihilistic attitude that ranged between simmering surliness and outright hostility. It didn't help that Jason had reported his father to the police for smoking a cigarette in the house, an act made criminal by the Smoking Control Statute of 2018, which outlawed smoking anywhere within 500 feet of another human being. Winston paid the $5,000 fine, which might have been considered excessive before the American dollar became virtually worthless as a result of QE13. The latest round of quantitative easing the federal government initiated was, once again, to "spur economic growth". This time they promised to push unemployment below its years-long rate of 18%, but Winston was not particularly hopeful.
Yet the family had a lot for which to be thankful, Winston thought, before remembering it was a Day of Atonement.. At least he had his memories. He felt a twinge of sadness when he realized his children would never know what life was like in the Good Old Days, long before government promises to make life "fair for everyone" realized their full potential. Winston, like so many of his fellow Americans, never realized how much things could change when they didn't happen all at once, but little by little, so people could get used to them.
He wondered what might have happened if the public had stood up while there was still time, maybe back around 2009, when all the real nonsense began. "Maybe we wouldn't be where we are today if we'd just said "enough is enough" when we had the chance, he thought.
Maybe so, Winston. Maybe so.

Tweeting Death To Sarah Palin (Video)

Approximately 50 anti-Palin tweets were compiled in a YouTube video published Jan. 10. Most were made on Jan. 8, the day of the shooting.
The compilation leads off with one user asking on Jan. 9, “When will the crosshairs fall over a Palin? Don’t any liberals own guns and forget to take their meds? C’mon already.” READ MORE HERE--->

98% of Blacks Continue to Vote for the Slavery of their Own People
Welfare Has Destroyed Black Americans
12/11/10 Filed in: Al Curry h/t to Freedom Man
The vast majority of black men used to be hard working family men. These were men that would earn an honest wage to provide for their wives and children, and if need be, work multiple jobs to ensure their family was secure. I know this may be hard to believe, but black men would actually go off to work, while the wife stayed home to tend to the home and children. Admittedly, it’s hard for me to believe this also since I have never seen this picture in my lifetime. Nevertheless, I have to take history’s word for it.
The pathetic picture we see today is a gross number of black women standing in welfare lines, while their “baby’s Daddy” hits the streets with the “homeboys” (and definitely not because he is looking for a job).
Yes, most blacks today are uneducated, they are not useful assets to their employers, they are poor, and they are on some sort of government subsidy. READ MORE HERE--->

EPA Power Grab Must Be Crushed
Hugh Hewitt
The Key New Year's Resolution: Stop the EPA
Rolling back Obamacare will be at the top of many to-do lists for 2011, but a far more significant power grab is underway at the United States Environmental Protection Agency, and blocking it should be the first priority of incoming chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee Fred Upton.
The good news is that Upton agrees and has already begun planning to stop the EPA before it can begin the process of asserting effective control over every business and many millions of households in the United States.
In an op-ed Upton co-authored with Tim Phillips, president of Americans for Prosperity, in Monday's Wall Street Journal and again on my radio show yesterday, Upton promised vigorous action by his committee to halt the EPA's attempt to accomplish via backdoor regulation what the Congress could not pass in 2009 or 2010 --a global warming-inspired, job-killing array of federal rules and commands on any operation or system that emits carbon dioxide. SHHH! Don't Tell Anyone, But Death Panels Are Back.
Physicians will be given financial incentives to encourage elderly Medicare patients to enter end-of-life "counselling" ("Do you really want to burden your family with your condition?"). This is something that some physicians now do with seriously ill patients. My problem with this is when this discussion is brought up because the physician is going to get a financial kickback for doing so. My question would be: Am I having drugs and procedures withheld due to their expense, and being told how I am being a burden to my loved ones because it's for my own good, or because my physician is getting more money from the system for doing so? At what point will this start to corrupt some of those in the medical community to ignore their Hippocratic Oath? Such a slippery slope. - Brian
Obama can't pass laws -- so he rewrites the rules: The new era of governing by regulation
Charles Krauthammer Friday, December 31st 2010, 4:00 AM
Most people don't remember Obamacare's notorious Section 1233, mandating government payments for end-of-life counseling. It aroused so much anxiety as a possible first slippery step on the road to state-mandated late-life rationing that the Senate never included it in the final health care law.
Well, it's back - by administrative fiat. A month ago, Medicare issued a regulation providing for end-of-life counseling during annual "wellness" visits. It was all nicely buried amid the simultaneous release of hundreds of new Medicare rules.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., author of Section 1233, was delighted. "Mr. Blumenauer's office celebrated 'a quiet victory,' but urged supporters not to crow about it," reports The New York Times. Deathly quiet. In early November, his office sent an e-mail plea to supporters: "We would ask that you not broadcast this accomplishment out to any of your lists . . . e-mails can too easily be forwarded." They had been lucky that "thus far, it seems that no press or blogs have discovered it. . . . The longer this (regulation) goes unnoticed, the better our chances of keeping it."
