Overreaching Government -First, Feds Go After Raw Milk. Now Rabbits

Posted by Brian

Many of us have heard of the USDA going after Amish farmers selling raw, unpasteurized milk.  In the Amish case, there were "zero"complaints of quality, illness from drinking the milk, or any other problems.  It's that it isn't pasteurized.  Now the USDA has set its sight on rabbits.
This is a prime example of government bureaucracies with too much power, obscure rules, and overzealous agents.  And it's only going to get worse.
The USDA is turning into the agricultural version of the EPA and OSHA. These are Departments that create rules and regulations with virually no oversight.  They in essence are able to creat laws out of this air, effectively doing the job that Congress is elected to do, and put fines, penalties, and even legal weight with jail sentences behind them.
A conservative Congress and President needs to be elected that will defund and dismantle a whole host these departmental bureaucracies, which are not supported by the U.S. Constitution as powers that have been delegated to the Federal Government.
Or, maybe the USDA is worried these rabbits pose a threat to national security and they are just nipping a rabbit sleeper cell in the bud.

It started out as a hobby, a way for the Dollarhite family in Nixa, Mo., to teach a teenage son responsibility. Like a lemonade stand.

But now, selling a few hundred rabbits over two years has provoked the heavy hand of the federal government to the tune of a $90,643 fine. The fine was levied more than a year after authorities contacted family members, prompting them to immediately halt their part-time business and liquidate their equipment.

The Dollarhite’s story, originally picked up by conservative blogger Bob McCarty, has turned into a call to arms for critics of the government’s reach and now has both Democratic and Republican lawmakers vowing to intervene.
