Bob Schieffer asked Obama senior advisor David Axelrod to defend allegations claiming that outside groups were taking "secret foreign money," as asserted, without citation, in a new Democratic National Committee advertisement.
Axelrod is asked by Schieffer if he has any "evidence" that the Chamber of Commerce is spending foreign money on elections. Axelrod says "Do you have any evidence that it's not"? This is the same kind of doublespeak as "It's not the nature of the evidence. It's the seriousness of the charge" that the Democrats used in investigating Republicans using unfounded charges. Remember Tom Delay? Run out of office on ethics charges that were later thrown out. These are the kind of tactics that make most decent Americans sick. He then goes on to say that they (the Dems) can make any accusations they want. This is why the electorate is pissed. Throw out any accusation you, true or not, and it's up to the other guy to prove that the accusation is false. Based on this kind of smear tactics, shouldn't the media be investigating SEIU (Service Employees International Union), and other unions that receive foreign dues or contributions, to see if they are using foregn dues in U.S. elections? This is gutter politics at its worst. I'm not a big Bob Schieffer fan, but hat tip to him for challenging Axelrod on this obvious attemmpt to smear the Chamber of Commerce.
